Safety and Independent Living for the Disabled

Not everyone who suffers from a mental disability is entirely without independence and some really can live out life on their own. Depending on the level of cognitive abilities and thought, it is possible to live independently, but some real safety measures should be exercised.

Lots of sites out there have covered tips for caring for these individuals and those with physical disabilities – focusing on enabling them to live on their own. Today, we thought we would add our two cents on the matter.

1) There should be landline phones present in major areas of the home where an individual is most likely to gather. This includes bedrooms, kitchens, living rooms, etc. This is to ensure that the individual can call for help in the event of an emergency. Cell phones are good too but coverage can be spotty depending on the coverage and provider.

2) Guard rails should be put in any of the major areas where slippage can occur. Bathrooms, stairways and yes, even the shower.

3) And, like the site says, the re-direction of any wires crossing any major areas of traffic is incredibly important.

And just remember that taking the necessary precautions is not at all the same as giving up your independence. Plenty of people with mental disabilities live healthy and productive lives, but it never hurts to be prepared.
